The family arrived in England when she was 3 or 4 years old. She went to school at St Saviors then to Nansen Road Senior School which is where she met her best friend Doreen Haywood. Most of their spare time was spent together and they shared many wonderful experiences over the years including venturing off to dance on stage in pantomimes and musicals. They were known as the terrible twins right up until they both married.
